CHD Poem

This is a great poem to remind everyone how common Congenital Heart Defects are and the need for additional research on how to prevent and/or cure all of the CHDs.  It is, of course, written by Stephanie Husted.

Somewhere....someplace...today....
A family is waiting to hear.....
Is something wrong with their baby?
The answers aren't quite clear...

This family has entered an unwanted world...
And they just don't know what to expect...
Somewhere...someplace...today
They first heard the words: heart defect.

And how they hoped this was not true...
And thought...this cannot be...
I too...know just how this feels..
This happened to ME...

Somewhere...someplace...today...
A man and a woman embrace...
Their baby is in surgery...
They long to see her face...

They haven't got to hold her yet...
Without...a cord or line...
They pace the room awaiting news...
And hope she'll be just fine.

Prayers fill this busy waiting room..
And mom and dad are scared...
Somewhere...someplace..today...
The tiniest hearts are repaired.

Somewhere...someplace...today...
A child's growing fast...
Smiling, laughing, thriving...
Her mom thinks...can this last?

It's almost easy...to forget
That anything is wrong...
Somewhere...someplace...today...
Her child seems so strong.

Somewhere...someplace...today...
A little girl fights...just to live...
A father holds her tiny hand...
His love...all he can give...

The doctor's are all baffled...
They fear that she might die...
Somewhere...someplace...today...
A family says goodbye...

Somewhere...someplace...each year...
More than 40,000 families will see...
What it means...when something's wrong...
They'll face a CHD.

Today...for just a moment...
Stop...remember...reflect...
My life has been forever changed by a heart defect.

  1. Thank you so much for the great poems and the photo of Jesus during the surgery. I print them all out. It is so great that you find the time to do the blog. I almost did one when Lauren was born, but just found it too stressful. Kudos to you! I am so excited that Hope is doing well. I think about her every day. I just realized that she has the same birthday as my other daughter, Abby-and HLHS like Lauren. What a coincidence! Abby turned three on 9/14. I was pleased to hear that she is eating well. 22 MLS is wonderful! I enjoyed the Step Down unit a lot when Lauren was there because it seemed more normal and Abby was allowed there, so I had both my children together until Lauren went home at 3 weeks. She was only in Step Down for 1.5 weeks, so maybe you won't have long to go! The day you drive away with her will be so exciting! I called everybody I knew and told them that both of my children were in the car with me! Jessica Makuh
